Watching the Babies Grow We have dedicated this issue of PM to function as a mini show-in-print, with the hope of whetting your interest to attend. CHRIS KOEPFER Editor-in-Chief ckoepfer@productionmachining.com O n the bookcase in my office I keep a framed certificate that celebrates the inaugural PMTS, held in April 2001. It was given to "charter exhibitors" as recognition of their participation in that first exhibition. Our show has come a long way since those early days. Not coincidently, January of 2001 also featured the premiere issue of Production Machining magazine. Both the show and the magazine have grown in the intervening years, and we continue to make positive contributions to our industry because of your loyal support. It is still a privi- lege to be part of it. As we approach the ninth biennial edition of our indus- try's exclusive get-together, many things have changed, yet many remain the same. PMTS is and has always been about people. While the technology of preci- sion manufacturing is on display all around us at the show, it's the reuniting with friends and colleagues that truly makes this show special. Since that first show and issue in 2001, we've collectively experienced ups and downs. e Great Recession painfully comes to mind. However, we have come out on the other side, and our industry is experiencing a well-earned spate of good business conditions. It's a good time to consider visiting PMTS. A record 280-plus exhibitors are scheduled to participate with demonstrations, technical experts, products and services designed exclusively to help businesses keep the current good times rolling. As you can see, we have dedicated this issue of PM to function as a mini show-in-print with the hope of whetting your interest to attend. Far from comprehensive, this issue presents merely a sampling of what is going to be on display in Columbus, Ohio. In our interconnected world of electronics, social media, internet and "i" things of various types, these channels require some foreknowledge, especially when it comes to technically intricate products and services to success- fully research electronically. A trade show such as PMTS is where that foreknowledge can be found. Many visitors I speak with tell me that they didn't know what they didn't know before visiting PMTS. e show and magazine work in tandem as discovery tools that can provide a targeted search across the various channels we have at our fingertips. However, it works best if we know what we're searching for. But that's the more cut and dry business aspect of the show. For me, it's the peer- to-peer interaction that is a major benefit of attending. While PMTS is a selling show, education and educa- tional sessions play a large role in the event. It has been a tradition since PMTS was first held to take advantage of so many people from our industry in attendance at one place and time to conduct technical presentations. is year, eight exhibitors have scheduled showfloor demonstrations as well as daily knowledge centers. is bonus interaction started at the first show and has continued to grow in this year's edition. ey are intimate and limited in size to afford interested attendees an oppor- tunity to interact with company's experts in a variety of technologies germane to one's business needs. PMTS is about manufacturing precision machined parts, but it, like our industry, is more than just making chips. We've all seen and participated in the advance of mecha- tronics on the shop floor as machine tools—the traditional production focus—have been included as one step in the manufacturing process. Pre-process and postprocess operations are an increas- ingly important part of the throughput equation. To that end, PMTS is once again being co-located with the Parts Cleaning Expo (PCx). It's a good combination, as the preci- sion machined products market continues to see customer emphasis on particulate counts and cleanliness standards from various industry segments. PCx is also featuring a schedule of technical presentations on various related topics. Please peruse this issue of PM and from it, make your "must see" list. en, make sure to visit Columbus, kick a few tires, and check out what may not be on your list. As an added incentive and another PMTS tradition, you are invited to join vendors, customers and prospects for a networking happy hour on Tuesday and Wednesday after- noons. It's going to be good!
