Multi-Purpose VMC with Tilting Spindle Head The Doosan VCF 850LSR, a VMC featuring a traveling column design with a tilting spindle head, is capable of machining a range of parts, using as many as fve axes simultaneously. The VCF 850LSR is a large capacity, travelling column design VMC with a tilting B-axis head. This versatile design allows for machining on multiple sides of a workpiece at once. The head can rotate 110 degrees on either side of vertical, enabling the VMC to machine large and complex parts in a single setup. With its included 500-mm (19.685") rotary table, as many as fve sides of a part can be accessed. Each axis is driven by a high precision double-nut ballscrew, which is centered between the guideways and supported on both ends by angular contact thrust bearings. All ballscrews are cooled by circulated, refrigerated oil at all critical components, including the ball nut, sup- port bearings and the motor housing. This system, coupled with a double pretension design, provides positioning repeatabil- ity with virtually no thermal growth. All axes have large-diameter ballscrews that are directly connected to oversize AC servo-drive motors without gears or belts in order to help eliminate backlash, the company says. The X, Y and Z axes use absolute-type linear glass scales for higher positioning accuracy that do not require referencing at power up. The scales virtually eliminate the impact of slides and ballscrew thermal expansion and backlash.
