can simply ask two questions to get an idea of the manufac- turer's needs: What material is the manufacturer working with? What burr class needs to be removed? With answers to these questions, appropriate solutions can quickly be found. In addition to establishment of the burr classifcation system, other fnishing concerns related to deburring include integration with automation, longer product life, aggressive/ compliant brushes and deburring without changing surface fnishes. Integrating Automation Growth in automation in general has been a trend in manufacturing and fnishing for quite some time, but it is becoming more amplifed as robotic applications and automated processes are being used more frequently. Automation provides accuracy and repeatable quality, day in and day out, and helps to attain tighter tolerances and higher production demands. Finishing products can be integrated into robotic cells that mimic the movement of the human hand. CNC machines and custom deburring machines are also neces- sary. Tese needs not only impact brush design, but also the mounting capabilities of standard and custom- ized machines. In-machine deburring has become a new standard in the aerospace industry. Aerospace manufacturing is adopting the automotive produc- tion style and is doing away with hand deburring. New aerospace standards are creating the need for much higher precision in deburring, tighter tolerances and exact production quantities. Automated processes are being put in place to keep manufacturing in-house and maintain tighter process control. Product design fexibility can aid in automated fnishing with the ability to add fow-through coolant. Coolant provides an ideal working environment for advanced brush products and also ofers many benefts for the manufacturer. Coolant keeps the nylon flament rigid for consistent fnishing and aids in achieving a fner surface fnish. Coolant also lowers the risk of warping and distorting parts, especially in applications where smaller or thinner parts are being processed. Longer Product Life Brushing is now mainstream in many applications, and users are seeking products that ofer a long service life. Tough and durable fnishing solutions are a necessity, so more brush suppliers are developing advanced technology lines that feature tougher nylon flaments that are not susceptible to premature fracture and that hold their grain longer, resulting in longer flament life and overall brush life. Product life directly impacts the user's bottom line.
