In May, I was visiting companies in Germany, and one of our stops was the Hainbuch factory in Marbach. Since we were planning to cover one of its U.S. customers in this issue of PM, it seemed like a good opportunity to see the company's headquarters. We were warmly welcomed by Sylvia Roll, third generation owner and managing director. She gave a presentation on the company and some of its history along with a global perspective from which Hainbuch operates. STOPPING BY THE GERMAN FACTORY justify itself," he says. "Our shop produces roughly 2,800 parts per month, with a staf of 15 people. By improving our procedures, we've generated improved efciency and increased our per-person output. As a result, even in slower times, we haven't had to lay anyone of. When you consider what a company invests in each person in terms of training, that represents a signifcant achievement, along with the fact that we've been able to keep our corpo- rate family together." He continues, "We've also added continuously to our output, and we expect to produce even more in the future. By adopting high precision, quick-change chucks, we've not only reduced scrap and improved change-over times, we've maintained and even improved the quality of the parts we make." Helping Shops Help Themselves Te need for support and training from the manufacturer is a critical factor in introducing improved workholding tech- nology. It's generally not a "plug and play" solution for pre- cision manufacturers. According to Larry McMillan, Great Lakes Area regional manager for Hainbuch America, "Te adoption of high Hainbuch's headquarters in Marbuch, Germany. The company's U.S. operation is located in Germantown, Wisconsin. The company was founded in 1951 and has grown from a small job shop to more than 700 employees, with three manufacturing plants in Germany and nine international subsidiaries. The company is a specialist in custom workholding and has carved out its niche in this segment. Business is good in part to the realization by many metalworking shops, such as RFM, that precision workholding can be an asset to production efciency. She sees this trend as being on the increase. We took a plant tour subsequently and like other machine tool vendors I've visited, the shop foor is a who's who of various metalworking brands. This setup does a couple of things: It allows the company to actually use its products in production and evaluate performance across diferent platforms, and it allows the company to optimize interfaces and other parameters between various machine tool manufacturers. For shops looking to further build on process optimization initiatives already implemented, a look at the advantages of precision workholding and quick- change capability may be another factor for improved quality and throughput. :: 35 Precision Workholding
